- Do you make backups? Hey, I *did*...
-
- My catastrophic idea: in search of compactness and defragmentation, backing up
- my Apple 40Mb SC disk to tape (Apple Tape Backup 40SC), initializing the disk,
- then restoring from tape. Simple and logical, isn't it? Oh, maybe it *is*
- logical, but...
- I made 2 backups: a file backup (the only one which allows disk reorganization
- on restore), and an image (or volume) backup (better safe than sorry...).
- Then I initialized my disk and restored the file backup. Check the disk... mmh,
- seems ok... wait... where is my System file? And Suitcase II? And -- oh no!
- -all my DAs, and fkeys, and fonts... In fact, where is the tape backup
- application? Damn, I *know* I'd have thought of it! My 40SC hard disk *was*
- the startup disk, and from it I ran the backup! So it didn't copy *any* of the
- open files (and Suitcase keeps a lot of them...). Incidentally, Apple "Tape
- Backup Owner's Guide" doesn't warn you about that: just an insignificant
- oversight...
- OK, time for a "virtual" Undo. Just get the image backup, a copy of the backup
- program, and all will be restored as nothing appened, right? Wrong!
- All I get from my image backup tape is an alert box saying that "The volume
- backup image on this cartridge is incompatible with the volume you are trying
- to restore"! I can only think of another "little oversight" from Apple:
- you *can't* restore a volume if you initialize it with a different driver
- version! That's probably what happened: I've now "Apple HD SC Setup" v.1.5
- -don't know what I had on my late lamented disk. And I have no previous
- versions to try.
- Now I'm stuck with an UNcustomized system (and if you did the kind of
- customization *I* did, you know how bad I feel). Is there some guru who can
- suggest some surgical operation on my disk, just to fool the tape? I have
- lancets (Fedit+, MacTools, SUM etc.), but don't know where to incise. I need
- some magic, please.
- Here in Italy the sun shines today, but my heart's cloudy.
- Marco

- Marco:
- I share your dis-enthusiasm for Apple's back-up equipment. One note,
- however: the back-up software does warn you about the files it's not backing up
- - by leaving a message, for about 2 minutes during the back-up process. Of
- course, if you're not watching your back-up take place, you'll miss it! -jbx
-
- ps Your best bet for getting the old stuff back is to get your old version of
- HD setup. Could it be that you still have an old version on the file-by-file
- back-up of your drive? Use find-file to find it..

- Jorg:
- many thanks for your sharing my grief. Helas, all my copies of HD setup are
- annoyingly equal: version 1.5. Obviously, my backups are too frequent... :-)
-
- I was hoping for an obscure but simple way to set some bit in my disk boot
- blocks, just to mimic an older drive version... Guess it's not *so* simple.
- Hope my beloved System's happily riding now on green prairies...
